Abstract

The article examines the historical development of Japan’s administrative-territorial division in chronological sequence, from its initial formation in the 7th–8th centuries to the present day. It identifies the most significant stages and outlines their key characteristics. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of the relationship between territorial and administrative division, the continuity of terminology and the changing functions of administrative units from the Ritsuryō system to the modern prefectural and municipal organization. The conclusion presents the Japanese Cabinet’s plans for establishing a “regional district system”.
